xAPI often comes up as "the thing that replaces SCORM" — that's not quite right, but it does solve problems SCORM never could. Here's what it is, why it exists, who relies on it, the benefits it brings, and how we can help if you're working with it.
What is xAPI?
xAPI (Experience API), also known as Tin Can API, is a data specification for tracking learning experiences. Unlike SCORM, it doesn't require content to run inside a browser-based LMS session — it can capture activity from mobile apps, simulations, VR, games, and even real-world, offline experiences.
Rather than reporting to an LMS directly, xAPI records simple statements in an "actor, verb, object" format — for example, "Sam completed Onboarding Module 1" — and sends them to a Learning Record Store (LRS), a dedicated system built to collect and query this kind of data.

xAPI exists to track learning in places SCORM simply can't reach. Its main value comes from:
